A brief history of the Elks

The national organization of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) was organized in 1868
San Antonio Lodge 216 was chartered in 1892
2,100 Lodges throughout the United States
Over 1 million members
Committed to the ideals of Charity and Patriotism
Raised $3.6 Billion for our programs
Created, staffed, managed the 1st VA Hospital and then donated it to the government
Started and funded the program that became the GI Bill
70,000 Elks served in WWI– a high percentage of the membership. 1,000 died
Directly responsible for recruiting 140,000 soldiers for WWII
Donated 500,000 pints of blood during one blood drive in WWII
400 Lodges Conducted flight training courses that qualified thousands of WWII pilots
Paid for air conditioners in Tripler Army Hospital during Vietnam to comfort vets
Elks Leadership serves without salary

We continue to Support our Vets at VA Hospitals around the world

Over $2 million in Scholarships awarded annually
We promote Drug Awareness among children
